Springtime in Madrid means sunshine, strolls through the park, and of course having a drink at your favorite terraza, or terrace. The flowers begin to bloom and the city itself begins to stretch its arms and wake-up after the cold, dark winter months. We at Mad 4 Madrid want to help make the transition to Spring as smooth as possible, which is why we’ve taken the liberty of compiling 5 things to do in Madrid to truly enjoy the hustling, bustling city of Madrid.

Things to do in Madrid on sunny days

  1. Take a Hike: http://www.cercedilla.es  Madrid truly does offer the best of both worlds; not only can you find a vibrant metropolis, but about an hour away there are beautiful mountains and trails waiting to be explored. Since Madrid is so well connected by trains, buses and cercanías, you don’t need a car to enjoy la naturaleza madrileña. Cercedilla is a quaint mountain town located about 57km from Madrid From Atocha Renfe you catch the line C-8 on the cercanîas and in an hour and fifteen minutes, you’ll be inhaling fresh, mountain air. Pack a lunch, lots of water, and go for a hike with friends. The trails are well marked and are labeled according to level of difficulty and distance. The information center also gives free maps!

  1. Pick a market, any market!
    • Madrid is such a cosmopolitan place that you can find virtually any type of cuisine here, and by checking out one of the city’s multi-level markets, your search is made that much easier.

3. Rooftop Chillin’

  • There are several noteworthy rooftop bars; however, my favorite is Gau&Café [CLOSED] in the Lavapiés neighborhood. It’s ideal if you’d like to venture out of the most commercial areas of Madrid and have a drink or dinner with some locals. If you’re going for dinner, best to make a reservation just in case. Insider’s tip: There’s a great market right next door to the Gau&Café that is worth a look called Mercado San Fernando. It’s off the beaten path, and you’re sure to enjoy.

  • This well-kept secret of Madrid is a gem and should not be missed. Although parks such as Retiro and Casa de Campo have their charm, Quinta de los Molinos truly comes to life in springtime and is ideal for an afternoon stroll. Take an afternoon to photowalk through the blossoming cherry trees and unwind a bit from the hustle and bustle that awaits just outside the park gates.

5. San Isidro: Live like a local

  • If you’re in town from May 14th through the 17th, San Isidro is a great celebration that only comes around this time of year. While walking through the winding streets of Madrid, you’ll be transported back in time: Madrileños wear the typical dresses and suits of the age. San Isidro is the patron saint of Madrid and his day is the 15th of May; however, the holiday is celebrated over a few days. There are precessions in the street followed by open-air activities such as concerts, traditional dishes such as rosquillas and of course dancing at the
